Minister of Education and Science, Youth and Sport of Ukraine Dmytro Tabachnyk Opened Winter Session of Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Low-residency Magnet Schools

On January 30, a sunny frosty morning, there was the opening of winter session of the Low-residency Magnet Schools (MAcS schools) of the Minor Academy of Sciences (MAcS, the Academy) of Ukraine. About 100 best students of the Academy arrived in the capital as participants of the Physico-Technical, Mathematics, Chemistry and Information and Telecommunication schools. During the week, the future scientists are going to attend lectures
with the practice study provided on the leading higher education institutions’ base.
The training marathon began at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (TSNUK),
with the young researches meeting the leading educationists and scientists of the country in the auditorium named after the prominent scientist, the first Rector of the University Mychailo Maksimovych. An honorable guest of the event was Dmytro Tabachnyk, the Minister of Education and Science, Youth and Sport of Ukraine. The Minister said, “It is due to the Minor Academy of Sciences whose activities launched the MAcS schools’ project (apart from the four stages of School Olimpiads held in Ukraine) that the high education system in Ukraine has become the only one in Europe to have the stable branched system of the talented youth selection and support. At present, more than 200 thousand
schoolchildren have been active participators of the Minor Academy of Sciences events,
preparing research papers to defend in public and having discussions with their colleagues and instructors. That is the reason for the Ministry to support the system of MAcS and other creative competitions and contests among our schoolchildren.” According to the Minister, it is the third year that the government has envisaged additional scores for the winners of the Research Paper Defense Competition Among MAcS Student-members III stage and of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiads IV stage to enter higher education institutions. The leader of the educational department also told about another one positive innovation in the field of the gifted youth support, launched a year ago by the execution authority, the possibility for Ukrainian students and post-graduates to study in the best
universities in the world on a competitive basis. At present, almost 300 young people are getting there education at foreign universities within this program and at the expense of state budget, so that the MAcS students have real chances to become the participants of the program in the future.

Dmytro Tabachnyk wished the youngsters to use the every minute of their study at the MAcS schools not to only enrich their knowledge base but also get creative approaches to resolve the troubling humankind issues. The Rector of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv Leonid Hubersky greeted the MAcS students on behalf of the University faculty. He invited the young researchers to become the University students, pointing out that the previous year 112 winners of the MAcS competition entered the famous University. By the way, delivered by the NTUU “KPI” Physical Faculty members at the Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy MAcS schools, the lectures have been making the students acquainted with their future lecturers right now.

The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU) Vice-President and the Institute
for Theoretical Physics Director, Anatoly Zagorodny, greeted his young colleagues, “small
academicians”, on behalf of NASU, “I see the great perspective for MAcS led by the Ministry of Education and NASU. Thus, the Minor Academy realizes its plans using both the possibilities of the university science and the NASU institutes’ ones.” To confirm his words, he told about the recently launched Centre for Science Studies “Fundamental Physics of Micro- and Macroworld”, cofounders of which being the National Center “Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine” (NC MAcSU), the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (TSNUK) and the State Fund for Fundamental Researches.

The People’s Deputy of Ukraine, Stanislav Dovhy, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, said, “I am glad to see your smiled faces reflecting the wish to get new knowledge touching the unknown, the pick of science. Our low-residency schools have been working since 2007 to have got a reputation as a powerful effective instrument of the interaction between the higher education institutions, scientific laboratories and the Minor Academy of Sciences.”

The next speakers were the MAcS schools’ students who shared their impressions while telling about the role the Academy plays in their lives and the impact it has on their researches as well. The 11th form student of Fastiv lyceum boarding school Viktor Yepishin, the student of the Chemistry MAcS School, shared his opinion on the issue, “For me, studying at MAcS is a possibility to research on a higher level, not only in a scale of school or home but on a national scale. Of the most importance is the possibility to consider myself scientist.” The 11th form student of Stakhanov gymnasium No. 7 (Luhansk oblast), Valeriya Airapetova, pointed out, “I am the MAcS novice. Nevertheless, from the very beginning, I have felt the influence of this organization on my life. While getting the theoretical knowledge in the ordinary school, here I may support the knowledge we acquired in practice. The Minor Academy opened the wide world of knowledge to me. In addition, I got acquainted with lots of interesting people. My paper concerns the human biology issue, and the participation in Chemistry School helps me a lot in my working on it.”

For Darya Yoshipishin, the 11th form student of Halych general education school (Ivano-
Frankivs’k oblast), the Minor Academy is not just an opportunity to express her in the field
of science but also a chance to meet with new friends. She said, “Gathered in this hall and
having come from different parts of Ukraine, we all are different but united by MAcS; to be
part of it is something special for every one of us as well as source of inspiration and pleasant reminiscences too.” Her paper concerns the ecology issue with its theme being “Characteristic of the atmospheric air state.” She dreams of entering Bogomolets National Medical University.

The next speaker, another one Chemistry MAcS School student, Ulyana Motornyuk , the
10th form schoolgirl of Rivne educational complex No. 12 pointed out, “Firstly, studying at
MAcS is a great self-development. Due to the Academy I was acquainted with so many peers, academicians, and scientists to probably be our future lecturers and colleagues.” While dealing with the electrochemical sensors in her research, the girl views herself as a future student of the NTUU “KPI” Chemical Technology Faculty.

The present students had an opportunity to meet with their older colleagues, the MAcS leavers, who had become university students though keeping strong communication with their alma mater. They shared their opinions, saying, “Having changed our world-view and the way we think, the Minor Academy has taught us to set and reach the goals, prove our point, ask questions, distinguish the main things from ones of not such an importance.” To wide extent, the MAcS students and leavers are people who set the goals, know how to rich them, think in a constructive way, weigh the situation impartially and are aware of what they wish for. Dynamic, all of them will soon become science, social and public elite able to change many things. “For us, the Minor Academy of Sciences is not just an ordinary school providing us with extracurricular activities but also a school of life,” that is the point of both Taras Shevchenko NUK sophomores Yevgen Kudryavets, the MAcS Leavers Association CEO, and Eduard Kunin, the Association member.
“For every one of us, the Minor Academy of Sciences is an opportunity to express ourselves and enhance our knowledge and skills, the main point being to present our work results in public that leads to objective appraisal of our activity; for acquired experience may appear to become a decisive factor when choosing a profession.” Thus, the Academy helps to direct their students’skills for the results to be always positive, that is the point of Eidar Aliyev, the 11th form student at Bila Tserkva. It is not his first year to study at MAcS, the area of his research being computer technology and network.

The 11th form student of Stakhanov gymnasium No. 7 (Luhansk oblast) Volodymyr
Horbatenko also may be regarded the experienced student of the Academy but in the sphere of information and telecommunication technologies. While dealing with sound current processing, the curious youngster is eager to create the managing voice system and program able to fluently communicate with the user. He is planning to enter NTUU “KPI” for information security specialty.

By the way, the young IT specialists soon will have a unique opportunity to visit the most high-tech computer center in the world, Silicon Valley in the USA. According to Stanislav Dovhy, the Minor Academy of Sciences had reached an agreement with the Facebook Company and personally with its founder Mark Zuckenberg about conducting the joint contest in the information technologies area. The winners of the contest, twenty young people, will visit the Silicon Valley where the creator of the most famous social network will present them the prices. During the meeting there was also discussed another one important international MAcS project to launch the first science school for the Ukrainian teachers of Physics on the base of the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN). Those virtually present in the auditory during the television spacebridge were the coworkers of the center, namely Mick Storr, the leader of the programs to visit CERN, as well as of the educational programs for teachers, and Marina Savino, the coordinator and translator.

On behalf of the MAcS students and faculty, the Academy President Stanislav Dovhy thanked the CERN workers for the given opportunity for our teachers to make acquaintance with the highest science technologies as well as to communicate with Nobel Prize winners in the area of physics.
